foraminiferaForaminifera or “forams” for short are a microfossil used in climate science research. Different species of forams like to settle at different elevations of a seabed. By mapping species distribution of forams different elevations of Belle Isle Salt Marsh, researchers Andy Kemp and Emmanuel Bustamantes are able to reconstruct the relative sea level rise of the site. Summer of 2023, I assisted them in 3D printing 20 forams. The set of 20 forams will be used by Earth and Ocean Science students at Tufts to learn species recognition. Experimental 3D prints, cross sections, and tests will be used in artist Patte Loper’s upcoming art exhibition.
